Fiat Multipla ugly duckling or inspired design classic??
November 22nd, 2007
I’ve owned two Fiat Multiplas now - my first was the 2003 1.6 SX which Jeremy Clarkson likened to an “Amazonian tree frog” and now I drive the “new look” Fiat Multipla 1.6 Eleganza as shown above. The Fiat Multipla’s external appearance results in derision and devotion in equal amounts particularly the earlier “frog face” Multiplas, but no one can deny the Multipla is a unique design! If you are a parent of teenage children be warned this is not a “cool car”, but younger children seem to warm to the Multipla’s quirky looks and mine were genuinely saddened when I traded my old frog face Multipla in for the new “slopey nose”.
Internally however is where the Fiat Multipla’s 2×3 seat configuration and space maximising design comes into it’s own. This is a car that can comfortably seat 6 adults never mind children with enough storage space for luggage and the family dog. A large boot combined with under seat storage drawers, deep door wells essential for any toddler determined enough to store sweets to the sticky stage along with the usual glove compartment space ensure the Multipla is a car with storage space that puts many 7 seater models to shame. If the Fiat Multipla’s external appearance has put you off considering the Multipla as a larger family car do yourself a favour and go check one out; I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised!
